Why Yixing Zisha Pots?
A lot of us have heard about Yixing zisha clay – the famous clay from the Yixing region of Jiangsu Province in Central China from which the finest bonsai pots and teapots have been made for centuries. Yet, not many of us know why Yixing zisha pots are so highly valued and tremendously favorable for our bonsai trees. Here, let me tell you the advantages of using Yixing zisha pots for our bonsai trees.
Porous Nature – Excellent in Moisture Absorption and Ventilation
Highly prized for the porous nature in zisha clay, Yixing bonsai pot is excellent in moisture absorption and ventilation. These small pores allow the root system of our tree to breathe better, avoid rotten roots and bad bacteria in the soil. This is definitely a big plus for promoting healthy growth of our trees.
Natural Colored – No Toxic Elements
Authentic Yixing zisha clay contains minerals such as iron, quartz, and mica, while is free of lead, cadmium, arsenic, and other toxic materials (else, Yixing zisha teapots wouldn’t be the most favorite for the Chinese to use when brewing their tea huh). Artificial, synthetic color pigments are never used when preparing the zisha clay.
So why are there so many different colors of zisha pots? Yixing zisha clay occurs naturally in three characteristic colors: light purplish brown (zisha clay, 紫砂泥), light greenish buff (鍛泥), and cinnabar red (朱泥). All other colors are simply created by mixing these three or adding mineral pigments, and/or by the natural color changing process in the firing process.
Earth Toned Color – Great Match with Bonsai
Color is one of the first few factors that we take into account when buying bonsai pots. Yixing zisha pots are made from the earth. These earth-toned bonsai pots are always good choices for our bonsai trees. This is especially true for the older bonsai trees as well as the flowering varieties since muted earth-toned pots tend not to steal attention, but reserve the spotlight to the bonsai trees.
Low Shrinkage Rate – Make Possible of Finely Detailed, Beautiful Craftsmanship

Yixing zisha clay makes not only the best functioning pots; they are also gorgeous works of art. Due to the low shrinkage rate of Yixing zisha clay when the clay is put in a kiln for the firing process, pottery artists can create very finely detailed, beautiful art work by carving and sculpting.
High Mineral and Metal Content – Strong and Damage Resistant
The Yixing zisha clay is considered very strong. The mineral and metal content of zisha clay (includes iron, quartz and mica) make bonsai pots very strong and resistant to damage after the firing process. It is known that the traditional, tiny teapots made of zisha clay can withstand over three hundred pounds of force. We can imagine how much weight a zisha bonsai pots can endure.
